Rain & water logging in the city

July 18, 2019 00:00:00

Most people love the rainy season. It brings with it some relief during the sweltering summer when people try to cope with the summer heat. But heavy rain creates many problems for Dhaka's residents.

Immediately after a rainfall, there is traffic congestion. It becomes difficult to move from one destination to the other.

Also, as the drains are often clogged with discarded polythene bags, plastic items and other trash, the rainwater cannot drain out. This accumulates on the roads and streets. Sometimes knee-level water can be found after just 10 to 15 minutes of rain in some parts of Dhaka.

Water-logged roads aggravate traffic congestion. Most vehicles often break down as water seeps into the engine. Rickshaw pullers carrying passengers in their rickshaws often cannot see the potholes and manholes underneath the water, leading to accidents.

The government has banned polythene bags. But it is still used by many people and traders. If we can get rid of polythene bags and the habits of discarding trash on the streets, most of the environmental problems in the city will vanish. We should be more conscious about what we are doing. We need to understand that we have a responsibility towards our city.
