Ramadan and price hike

May 08, 2019 00:00:00

It is a matter of grief that some unscrupulous businesspeople have raised price of commodities manifold ahead of Ramadan. The majority people of our country are Muslims and they are fasting in Ramadan. However, it would be difficult for many devotees to fast as they will have less to eat.

When people of other countries lower the price or give discount on necessary commodities, our country's businesspeople are busy making extra bucks during this holy month. As businesspeople are influential, they hardly pay heed to government instructions.

The syndicates of businesspeople are raising the price. The government should monitor the market and dismantle the syndicates and should ensure supply of essentials if there is any scarcity in the market. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and law enforcement agencies should work together. Illegal hoarding must be stopped.

Moreover, the government needs to explore the reasons behind price hike.

The government can effectively lower the price or at least help the lower income group by arranging fair price shops where people could buy their necessary goods at an affordable price. It is against the religious spirit to hurt people and give pain by syndication and hoarding.
