Remembering Rana Plaza victims and survivors

April 26, 2019 00:00:00

On April 24, we solemnly observed the sixth anniversary of Rana Plaza disaster, the shocking calamity that killed 1,100 people back in 2013 and it is very much fresh in the minds of the people. It is the deadliest structural failure accident in normal time. The world was in shock and sadness.

I hope we have learnt our lessons and the Rana Plaza incident will make us more inclined towards work safety. The owner of the building should face maximum punishment so that it becomes an example.

The world should stand by the Bangladesh ready-made sector and increase the price of goods so that the workers get benefits from it. Too much squeezing of price by the international buyers compels the Bangladesh garments industry to minimise facilities for their workers.

We are the second largest exporter of ready-made garment products in the world and we export to over 132 countries around the world. It has been estimated that the export will be double by 2022. The garments sector should stand by the survivors of Rana Plaza disaster as their nightmare is not over or probably will not be over.
