Restricting rickshaw movement on Dhaka streets
July 08, 2019 00:00:00
I think banning rickshaws on some roads will be helpful to reduce traffic jam. On July 07, I came to my office with relative ease as I found no usual traffic jam due to the absence of rickshaws in Badda area. My colleague also came to office by bus and he was happy since there was hardly any jam. I think the city corporation should introduce more buses where rickshaws are banned so that the commuters do not face any problem.
I am glad to know that the city corporations of Dhaka will gradually ban rickshaws from more roads. If we can free footpaths from hawkers, the traffic jam will automatically reduce. Rickshaws will remain but in a limited number so that they do not hamper the movement of other vehicles.
According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), at least 0.5 million rickshaws run in the city and there are more than one million rickshaw drivers and their families dependent on it. Due to the illegal rickshaws, the city corporations are losing revenue, while an increased number of rickshaws continue to contribute to traffic congestions.
We must bring discipline in our traffic so that there is speed in our day-to-day life.
