Shameful attack on Ivy

January 22, 2018 00:00:00

NARAYANGANJ Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy was under attack as she was conducting a drive to free footpaths of Narayanganj from illegal occupation by hawkers. While the mayor was attempting to facilitate unhindered movement of the citizens along the footpaths which is one of their basic rights, efforts were made to refrain her from doing this. As per media reports she was manhandled and had to be admitted to hospital. Perhaps this is the reason why we do not see similar actions being taken in other cities where footpaths are being occupied by illegal traders and pedestrians cannot walk on them without any obstruction.

I think the mayor was right and she was fully empowered to do so by the laws of the land. Although she endangered her life, the legality of her drive cannot be challenged. She allocated six alternative spots for hawkers. Her sympathy for small traders is clear and they should welcome the move by the Narayanganj Mayor. I also feel that other municipal authorities should follow suit and take steps to free footpaths under their jurisdictions from illegal occupation. I believe, the common people have full support for Mayor Ivy of Narayanganj.
