Terror attacks at Christchurch

March 19, 2019 00:00:00

I

The barbaric killing at Christchurch in New Zealand has surpassed most other violent acts of the past. The killer, as seen in the video footage, was mercilessly firing and killing Muslims, as if he was preying on birds. It has been reported that at least 50 people have been killed by the assailant's savagery.

The assailant swooped with lethal shotguns on the unarmed people who thronged the mosque to perform their Jummah prayer. He carried out the massacre live on Facebook. Five Bangladeshi nationals were killed in the terrorist attacks carried out in the two mosques.

Meanwhile, our national team visiting New Zealand managed to narrowly escape the incident. The ruthless terrorist killing was strategically planned to target the immigrants to different countries of the West. We condemn the gruesome killing. We are deeply shocked by the tragic end of so many lives and solemnly pray for the salvation of the departed souls.

II

A 'right-wing extremist' gunman rampaged through two mosques in the quiet New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday killing at least 50 worshippers including five Bangladeshis heinously, and wounding dozens more.

The Bangladesh national cricket team was safe, though they were heading towards Masjid al Noor to say their Jummah prayers on that day.

Our cricketers are still very shocked by the incident though they have returned to the country already. The security arrangement of our cricket team in New Zealand was not up to the mark.

A player of the Bangladesh national cricket team confessed to the media that a tight security is arranged when they visit countries like India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But when they visit Australia, England, New Zealand etc., very ordinary to no special security is provided to them.

It is time to rethink the security arrangement of the national cricket team when they tour foreign countries to play matches. The President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board has taken the matter seriously and assured to take necessary steps.
