Traffic jam hampering our normal life

January 10, 2018 00:00:00

ONE of the major problems encountered regularly by people living in cities in our country is that of traffic jam. It is a recurring problem which not only consumes our valuable time but also leaves us exhausted at the end of the day. There may be several reasons behind it, but there is no denying the fact that negligence of traffic authorities plays a major role. Dhaka and Chittagong are the worst sufferers. Students cannot be present at school in time, patients cannot be moved to hospitals for emergency treatment, women, children and elderly people cannot move from one place to another in good time and so on, not to speak of the hazards faced by working people.

I recognize that Dhaka is a thickly populated city compared to its area and traffic jams during office hours are natural. But there can be no reason for such perennial traffic congestions which had been occurring more due to mismanagement than anything else. So many flyovers have been built recently and more are in the pipeline, but these appear to have very little effect on the overall traffic situation which will deteriorate further in the coming days. I therefore honestly feel that the management of traffic authorities should be geared to face upcoming challenges and bring the traffic situation under control.
