Travellers' suffering on Benapole border

August 21, 2019 00:00:00

The India-Bangladesh border crossing at Petrapole and Benapole is the busiest of all between the two countries and during the Eid holidays the number of Bangladeshi tourist increases manifold. It is the most convenient route for travellers from both the countries, especially for those who want to travel at a modest cost.

People were seen waiting in the queue for hours on the fourth day of Eid-ul-Azha due to shortage of service counter for completing immigration formalities. There is no trolley for travellers to carry their goods so porters charge high. They often misbehave with travellers.

In view of the importance of this border point, the Bangladesh authorities should deploy more officers during the longer holidays to ease pressure of travellers. We think separate counters should be introduced for women, elderly people and sick people so that they don't have to suffer or face harassment while crossing the border.
