AL leader shot dead in Rangamati

Amid a tense situation over the death of seven people in a gun attack in Baghaichhari upazila on Monday, Bilaichhari upazila Awami League president was gunned down by some miscreants at Farua in the upazila on Tuesday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Suresh Kanti Tongchanga.

Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of Rangamati Police, said that when Suresh was returning home by a boat from the upazila headquarters along with his wife and children after the upazila election, a gang of miscreants obstructed his boat and opened fire on him around 8:30am, leaving him dead on the spot.

Angered by murder, Awami League activists staged demonstrations in the area.

Another report says : A local leader of Awami League was found dead at Islampur village in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased was Md Joynal Abedin, 50, son of Md Muslim Uddin of the village and general secretary of Jahangirnagar union AL.

Superintendent of Police Md Barkatullah Khan said Joynal remained missing since he went out of his home around 11:30 am to bring some goods from his shop.

Locals spotted his stabbed body near a road early in the morning and informed police.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and 15 others injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League at Baluchar village in Raipura upazila on Tuesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Iqbal Miah, 27, son of Ahsan Miah, and Aman Miah, 30, son of Robi Miah.
