Members of Bangladesh Army were deployed in 389 upazilas across the country on Sunday ahead of the national election slated for December 30, reports UNB.

Besides, members of Bangladesh Navy were posted in 18 upazilas.

Contacted, Assistant Director of Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) Directorate Rezaul Karim Shammi said Army and Navy members who were deployed in different upazilas on Sunday will start their activities as striking forces from this (Monday) morning.

Staff Reporter adds: Jatiya Oikya Front (JOF) welcomed on Sunday the decision of deploying members of the armed forces ahead of the December 30 general election.

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to deploy the army as a strike force from today (Monday) to maintain law and order during the pre- and post-election period.

A press release, signed by Dr Kamal Hossain as the convener of the alliance, expressed optimism that army deployment would create a congenial electoral environment.

"We hope the armed forces won't stand against the interest of the people or seek to implement the agenda of an individual or a group of people," it stated.

The coalition of five political parties also expressed hope that the armed forces would not tarnish their image by working for any individual.

"The armed forces must create a level-playing field for all parties and play a positive role," reads the release.

As part of a decision made earlier, the military personnel will take position across the country from December 24 to January 02 for the polls.
