Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said on Monday the deployment of army will help boost the voters' confidence in the upcoming 11th parliamentary election billed for December 30.

"The aim to deploy army is to create confidence among the voters," he told newsmen after visiting 'mock voting' using electronic voting machines (EVMs) at Residential Model School and College in the city.

Nurul Huda said the presence of army will help the EC hold a fair election. "I believe any unexpected situation can be controlled from now on."

He called upon the contesting political parties' candidates and their respective supporters to engage only in campaign rather than involving themselves in violence and provocation.

He expressed the hope that after the deployment of army at the field level no untoward incidents could take place.

Mentioning that army can do everything whatever necessary to maintain the law and order, Nurul Huda said, "If any situation is created in front of the army which needs to be dealt with, the army can do that at their own initiative. They (Army) will perform their duty following the 'In Aid to Civil Power Act'."

Replying to a question, he said every official received adequate training on EVMs.

Regarding the rally of Jatiya Oikyafront which was scheduled to be held December 27, he said, "I am yet to discuss the matter with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner."
