Demanding Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia's unconditional release from prison, the party's secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, warned that they would go for a tougher movement if Khaleda is not released.

Fakhrul also called upon the government to ensure required medical treatment for Khaleda immediately as she is in very 'critical condition'.

They BNP secretary general placed the demands at a human chain programme on Wednesday organised by the party in front of the National Press Club in the city.

Fakhrul alleged that the 'fear of losing power' is the reason behind the government's unwillingness to release Khaleda or providing her with required medical treatment.

"We have repeatedly demanded treatment of Khaleda Zia at a preferred specialised hospital, but the government is not listening to us. The government fears to arrange proper treatment for her. Because they think they will lose power if she takes treatment," he said.

Khaleda Zia should be freed first to rescue the country's democracy; in this regard, the party needs to be organised apart from continuing legal battle, he said, adding, "A tougher movement has to be launched by uniting the country's people regardless of their socio-political identity."

Referring to Khaleda's illness, the BNP secretary general said getting necessary medical treatment is her basic right but the government is depriving her of it.
