BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia failed to secure bail on Sunday in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case as the High Court says it will pass an order on her bail petition upon receiving all the documents relating to the judgment from the lower court, reports UNB.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim concluded the hearing on her bail petition Sunday and kept the order pending as the HC is yet to receive the verdict documents.

On Thursday last, the HC asked the lower court to submit all the relevant documents within 15 days.

The hearing on Khaleda's bail petition began around 2:40pm and concluded at 3:40 pm.

Several hundred BNP leaders and activists gathered on the apex court premises in the afternoon to hearing the court order.

As the court did not issue its order on the bail petition, pro-BNP lawyers demonstrated on the High Court premises demanding immediate release of Khaleda.

Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with the Khaleda's lawyers at the High Court and discussed the next course of legal action to ensure bail for Khaleda, said BNP chairperson's media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

One of the lawyers of the BNP Chairperson, wishing anonymity, said Khaleda may not get bail soon from the apex court if the lower court makes delay in sending the case documents. The trial court has still 13 days to send the documents as per the deadline set by the HC bench.

After receiving the documents, he said the bench will examine those and then pass its order.

Earlier on Thursday, Khaleda filed two separate petitions with the High Court.

After hearing one of the petitions, the court earlier stayed the fine of Tk 210 million slapped by the lower court on Khaleda and deferred bail hearing in the case till Sunday.

Barrister Nowshad Jamir and Barrister Kaiser Kamal, on behalf of the BNP chief, submitted the 880-page bail petition showing 31 grounds for granting her bail.

On Tuesday, lawyers of the BNP chairperson filed an appeal with the High Court challenging her sentence in the graft case. The court fixed Thursday for hearing it.
