Mild tremor shakes Ctg, Comilla

A moderate earthquake was felt in some parts of the country at 12 hours 47 minutes 16 seconds (BST) on Sunday, according to a Met office press release. The epicentre of the tremor was in the Myanmar-India border region, 470 kilometres northeast from the Seismic Centre of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) at Agargaon in the city. The magnitude of the tremor was 5.5 on the Richter scale. The tremor was felt in Chittagong and Comilla regions, but there was no report of casualties, said a BMD official. — BSS

Sydney records hottest day after 80 years

The city of Sydney recorded its hottest day on Sunday with the mercury hitting 47.3 degrees Celsius after almost 80 years, according to Australian weather authorities. Much of Sydney reached its peak temperature at about 3 p.m., with the city's west bearing the brunt of the heat, reports the Guardian. A severe fire-danger rating was issued for the greater Sydney region, while much of the rest of the state has a "very high" rating. —IANS
