Onion price heats up at Hili for closure of port on Eid

HILI (Dinajpur), Aug 19: Wholesale traders hiked the onion price by Tk 10-11 per kg here on the excuse of short supply following the closure of Hili port for eight days on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. The imported onion was selling at Tk 31-32 per kg against Tk 20-22 before the Eid after the export-import activities resumed at the port on Sunday. — UNB

Export thru Akhaura land port remains halted

BRAHMANBARIA, Aug 19: Export through Akhaura land port remained halted since Saturday morning as Agartala land port officials are unable to handle the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) installed by Indian Customs Authority. Mobarak Hossain, president of Akhaura C&F Agents Association, said Agartala customs and port authority stopped the import of goods from Bangladesh as nobody could handle EDI machine at Agartala port in India. Over 30 trucks carrying goods worth Tk 40 million remained stuck at the port, he added. — BSS

College student dies falling off rooftop of building in city

A college student died after falling off the rooftop of a building in the city's Gandaria area on Monday. The deceased was identified as Sabbir Hossain Rafi, 18, a first year student of BAF Shaheen College and son of Kamal Uddin of Sadar upazila in Gopalganj district. Rafi went to the roof of the four-storey building around 11:30 am and fell down. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.----UNB
