Farmers Bank now Padma Bank

Dogged by irregularities, the Farmers Bank has been rechristened as Padma Bank in a desperate makeover after the Bangladesh Bank endorsed a proposal. The board of directors of the bank, which is reeling under allegations of irregularities and loan scams, recently sent the proposal to the central bank. The financial sector regulator announced the approval in a circular on Wednesday, saying it replaced 'The Farmers Bank Limited' with 'Padma Bank Limited' on the list of all scheduled banks from Tuesday. — bdnews24.com

Lynch-mob attack kills two

GAZIPUR, Jan 30: Two suspected robbers were killed in a lynch-mob attack at Rathura village in Kaliganj upazila early Wednesday. The identities of the deceased could not be known yet. A group of robbers numbering 10-12 swooped on the house of one Majnu Mia at the dead of night, said Abdul Quader, chairman of Nagori Union Parishad. Sensing danger, the inmates of the house raised alarm seeking help, he said. Later, locals chased the robbers and caught two of them while the others managed to flee the scene. — UNB
