First phase of UZ polls on March 10

The first phase of Upazila council elections will be held on March 10 next. Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin announced the election schedule at a press conference at the EC secretariat Sunday. The last date for the submission of nomination papers is February 11 while that of withdrawal on February 19. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on February 12. The first Upazila council elections were held in 1985, while the following three others were held in 1990, 2009 and 2014. The last one was organised in six phases. — UNB

MoU signed for construction of 162 mosques

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed Sunday between Religious Affairs Ministry and Local Government Division (LGD) to construct 162 model mosques on the land of upazila councils under a project to build 560 mosques in all upazilas.Construction of the remaining 398 mosques will be implemented later. — BSS

Tri-nation car rally begins in Delhi today

A 20-day inter-country motor car rally commemorating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and marking the 30th National Road Safety Week begins in New Delhi today. Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will jointly flag off the motor car rally at Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, Rajghat. The rally will travel through places historically associated with Gandhiji, both in India, as well as in Bangladesh and Myanmar, official sources said on Sunday. — BSS
