Parliament passes supplementary budget

Seven members move 173 cut-motions

Parliament passed on Tuesday the supplementary budget of Tk 153.39 billion (15339.83 crore) for fiscal 2017-18 to meet the increased expenditures under different ministries and divisions, reports UNB.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith placed the supplementary budget in the House on June 07 along with the national budget.

Different ministries, divisions and institutions sought the additional amount.

As many as 173 cut-motions were moved by seven members.

Discussions were held on four cut-motions on ministries of public administration, LGRD and cooperatives, power and health.

These cut motions were brought by Jatiya Party MPs Fakhrul Imam, Nurul Islam Omar, Kazi Firoz Rashid, Nurul Islam Milon, Rowshan Ara Mannan, Salim Uddin, Mohammad Abdul Munim Chowdhury and Independent MP Rustam Ali Farazi (Pirojpur-3).

The cut-motions were rejected by voice vote.

According to the budget document, a sum of Tk 4.0 trillion (400,266 crore) was allocated in favour of 62 ministries and divisions for the 2017-18 fiscal.

But in the supplementary budget, allocation for 24 ministries and divisions increased to Tk 153.39 billion (15,339.83 crore). For 35 ministries and divisions it came down by Tk460.55 billion (46,055.66 crore).

As a result, the budget allocation for these ministries and divisions was reduced to Tk 287.71 billion (28,771 crore) and the total allocation now stands at Tk 3.71 billion (371,495 crore).

The Power Division got the highest allocation of Tk 39.26 billion while the lowest Tk 31.3 million was given to the Supreme Court.

The Prime Minister's Office received Tk 33.47 billion, while Public Administration Minister Tk 4.72 billion, Public Service Commission Tk 55.4 million, Economic Relations Division Tk 11.62 billion, IMED 118.3 million, Statistics and Information Management Division Tk 509.1 million

Foreign Ministry got Tk 286.0 million, Defence Ministry Tk 6.59 billion, Law and Judiciary Division 563.3 million, Public Security Division Tk 11.09 billion, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division got Tk 40.1million, Women and Child Affairs Ministry Tk 573.4 million, Housing and Public Works Ministry Tk 498.0 million, Religious Affairs Ministry Tk 3.15 billion.

Local Government Division received Tk 18.68 billion, Rural Development and Cooperative Division Tk 3.11 billion, Land Ministry Tk 916.6million, Water Resources Ministry Tk 1.95 billion, Road Transport and Highways Division Tk 11.82 billion, Shipping Ministry Tk 17.3 million, CHT Affairs Ministry Tk 932 million and Health Education and Family Welfare Division Tk 1.62 billion.
