51pc female internet users are cyber-crime victims

Study shows 11 types of harassment

FE Report | May 21, 2018 00:00:00

Over 51 per cent female internet users are victims of cyber-crimes in the country while it is about 49 per cent for male, a recent study has revealed.

The study also said social networks have become the den of different cyber crimes of which female users aged between 18 and 30 years are the main victims, about 74 per cent.

Females of the country are the least safe due to fake social networking account, hacking and concealing information, the study says.

The most disturbing finding is that 54 per cent of the victims do not get any action or prevention from the law enforcers after reporting the cyber-crime while 30 per cent of the victims are unaware of taking legal steps.

These were revealed Sunday at a dissemination programme of 'Trend of Cyber Crime in Bangladesh' at Dhaka Reporter's Unity (DRU) auditorium in the city.

Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation conducted the survey. Foundation adviser AKM Nazrul Haider chaired the programme while convener Kazi Mustafiz presented the study findings.

The study was conducted among 133 sufferers by asking them nine questions for nearly two years at individual level. Questions were about the type of crime, legal measures for prevention, reasons for not taking legal measures, experience after complaint, and prevention mechanism.

The study showed 11 types of cyber-crimes including - ID hacking/information stealing, e-mail fraud, mobile account hacking/data stealing, fraudulence during online shopping, online threat message, propaganda by distorting pictures, propaganda on social networking sites through fake accounts, online account hacking, porno video, publish ones picture online without permission, and others (bribery trading of fake police, love affair fraudulence etc).

The study warns that lack of clear conception of prevention and social stigma can make scope for the cybercrime to go unabated.

In his presentation, Kazi Mustafiz said more than half of the cyber crime victims do not take legal help and 30 per cent of them do not know about how to take legal actions. Over 25 per cent victims do not lodge complaint to the law enforcing agencies as they think they will not get any remedy. Only 7.0 per cent victims said they had obtained prevention from the law enforcers.

Cyber criminals usually resort to new strategies to suppress their wrongdoings. That's why police cannot handle the cases properly due to lack of skills.

According to Social Brokers Dotcom, about 61 per cent internet user of the country use facebook which is 2.15 per cent of the total population. Among the large number of users, most of them are young aged between 18 and 24 years and 78 per cent of them are male and 24 per cent female.

In the programme, Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh joint secretary Moinuddin Ahmed said the number of non-licenced internet service providers is increasing. They do not keep detail information about the users. That's why detection of the cyber criminals is difficult after an occurrence.
