ACC raids Titas head office over illegal connections

FE Report | January 31, 2019 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday conducted a drive in the head office of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited following allegations of giving illegal gas connections to residential and industrial units.

The commission received complaints through its hotline-106 that a syndicate of Titas Gas, comprising its labour leaders, officials and staffers, had been installing illegal gas connections and tampering meters for long in exchange for money.

During the drive, ACC enforcement team collected a list of Titas officials and staffers involved in setting up illegal gas connections and tampering meters.

Talking about the drive, ACC director general (admin) Muhammad Munir Chowdhury, also chief coordinator (enforcement), said, "The commission will carry out regular surveillance and drives to stop corruption in Titas Gas."

ACC will investigate the sources of wealth of those who have been benefited from giving illegal gas connections and will bring the accused under trial, he added.

Meanwhile, on the day, separate teams of the commission conducted drives in 11 schools of four districts - Rangamati, Dinajpur, Faridpur and capital Dhaka - as part of its move to ensure quality education in the country.

Acting on the allegations that the teachers remain absent from the classes, ACC teams suddenly went to six primary schools in Dinajpur and found all the headmasters absent that day.

The schools were - Kanchandoba Government Primary School, Ragunathpur Government Primary School, Garibpara Government Primary School, Rahimapur Government Primary School, Binnagari Government Primary School, and Nababganj Model Primary School.

In Rangamati, ACC team found that Rani Dayamoyee High School was realising Tk 2,000 from every SSC candidate against form fill-up and forcing them to participate in coaching unethically.

Bishnupur High School and Halima Girls School and College in Faridpur were also taking extra fees from the SSC candidates for form fill-up.

The commission ordered the three schools to return the money collected illegally to the students.

In another school in Faridpur, Tepakhola Government Primary School, ACC team found one teacher absent and issued a show cause on her.

An ACC team went to the Motijheel Government Primary School on the day to see whether the school authorities have returned the extra money collected in the similarly unlawful way to the guardians of students.

On January 28, the headmistress of the school was suspended for allegedly taking extra money for admission by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education following recommendation of the ACC.

The anti-corruption watchdog directed the school to return the collected money.
