Illegal wealth accumulation

FE Report | May 10, 2018 00:00:00

Ha-Meem Group managing director AK Azad again sought time to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday to face interrogation over his alleged accumulation of illegal wealth.

Accepting his appeal, the commission granted him ten working days to appear at the ACC headquarters on May 22, said ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

In this regard, the commission issued a letter for third time to Mr Azad, signed by ACC director Mir Mohammad Jainul Abedin Shibly.

Earlier, ACC summoned Mr Azad, also a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), on April 3 to appear at its head office but he did not respond to the call showing illness as a cause.

This time, the businessman sought two months more to face ACC quizzing showing personal reasons but the commission granted him ten days only.

The anti-graft watchdog, previously, received a complaint on its 'Hotline-106' that the businessman amassed illegal wealth through VAT and tax evasion.

In the middle of the allegations against the business leader, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) on March 20 demolished part of Azad's Gulshan residence built allegedly without any approved design.
