Australian counter-terrorism envoy in town

FE Report | March 21, 2019 00:00:00

In a bid to further enhance his country's security engagement with Bangladesh, Australia's Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, Paul Foley PSM is now visiting Bangladesh.

The visit is aimed at bolstering joint cooperation to tackle the global scourge of terrorism and violent extremism, says a media release issued by the Australian High Commission on Wednesday.

"Ambassador Foley's visit is a timely opportunity to explore with senior Bangladesh government law enforcement and public security officials's effective ways of preventing and countering violent extremism, regardless of its origins".

Echoing High Commissioner Julia Niblett's earlier public statement, Mr Foley extended his heartfelt condolences to the Bangladeshi victims of the shocking terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, and their families, said the statement.

Mr Foley who came to the country on Tuesday, highlighted the statements of the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, condemning this atrocity in the strongest possible terms.

During his visit, Mr Foley emphasised that terrorism and violent extremism are challenges shared by all countries.

As a longstanding development and security partner, Australia will continue to support Bangladesh and its people to address these threats.

As Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, Mr Foley leads Australia's international engagement on counter-terrorism and counter violent extremism. He is leaving today (Thursday).
