Both Bangladesh and Bhutan are exploring the possibility of signing a number of deals on power trade and connectivity during the visit of Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering to Bangladesh in the second week of April.

The foreign secretaries of the two countries disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing the press after the second Foreign Office Consultations (FoC) meeting held at State Guesthouse Meghna in the city.

"We have also discussed the upcoming visit of the Bhutanese prime minister to Dhaka," Bhutanese foreign secretary Sonam Tshong said.

"This will be like a homecoming for our prime minister as you know that he has spent 10 years in Bangladesh for education purposes," Mr Tshong said.

Lotay Tshering was a student of Mymensingh Medical College and completed his graduation from this institution.

Apart from the bilateral issues, the two sides discussed cooperative frameworks on transit and connectivity, especially under the BBIN framework which, Bangladesh believes, is crucial for the future development of the sub-region, foreign secretary of Bangladesh M Shahidul Haque said.

Trilateral cooperation between Bangladesh, India and Bhutan in the field of hydroelectric power also came up at the meeting for discussion.

The meeting discussed an entire gamut of the bilateral relations and took stocks of the progress in tourism, human resources development, science and technology, agriculture, food security, water resources management, climate change and people-to-people contact, Mr Haque said.

Responding to a query, he said several deals on power trade, connectivity and tourism promotion may be signed during the visit of Bhutan's PM.

Lotay Tshering, the 51-year-old leader of the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa, became the PM of Bhutan in November last year. He is a urological surgeon and obtained his medical degree from Bangladesh.
