Bikalpa Dhara sets conditions to join national alliance

FE Report | October 14, 2018 00:00:00

Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh president Dr AQM Badruddozza Chowdhury reiterated on Saturday his party's stance not to join the new national alliance unless BNP leaves Jamaat-e-Islami.

"We have informed Oikya Prokia leaders about our two conditions. One of the conditions is to leave anti-liberation forces (Jamaat) by BNP and another is to establish a balance of power between the president and the prime minister in the future state power structure," he told a press briefing at his Baridhara residence in the city.

He, however, said he is still hopeful about forging a national unity.

Mentioning that he was the first secretary general of BNP, he said BNP during the tenure of former president Ziaur Rahman was completely different compared with the present leaderships of BNP in believing in the spirit of War of Liberation.

Mr Chowdhury, also former president of Bangladesh, said most of the BNP leaders still firmly believe in the spirit of War of Liberation.

He suggested that BNP should leave Jamaat for, he said, their controversial role during the War of Liberation.

He blamed the president of Gono Forum for creating barriers to the formation of national unity.

"From today (Saturday), Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh will not give any scope to mislead the nation in the name of Jatiya Oikya (National Unity)," secretary general of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh Abdul Mannan said in a written statement. He was also present at the press conference.

"Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh will not be involved with any conspiracy to install BNP in power unless the party clearly announces to leave the anti-liberation forces and establish a balance of power in parliament and the state," he said.

Mr Mannan said his party chief and other leaders went to the residence of Gono Forum leader Dr Kamal Hossain at Bailey Road at 3:30 pm on the day.

But they did not meet them although they were asked to visit his (Dr Kamal) residence, he added.
