FE Report | May 23, 2019 00:00:00

Canada on Wednesday announced $100 million in aid for the most vulnerable people severely affected by the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh.

"I was deeply moved to see the incredible difference our partners are making in the lives of some of the most vulnerable in Cox's Bazar, epecially women and children. The host community has been severely affected by the influx of Rohingya. The Rohingya themselves have lost everything," said Kamal Khera, parliamentary secretary to the minister of international development, while announcing the assistance.

She mentioned that in collaboration with its partners and international community, Canada's humanitarian and development assistance is providing life-saving relief and assistance to build a more prosperous future for everyone, said the Canadian High Commission in a statement.

Earlier, Canada provided $251 million to support the humanitarian response to the Rohingya people.

On behalf of Matyam Munsef, minister of international development, and minister for women and gender equality, Kamal Khera, announced the assistance.

The aid includes $32.15 million in humanitarian assistance to mitigate the impact of the monsoon and cyclone seasons, improve living conditions in refugee camps, support sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response initiatives, and increase access to health facilities and sexual and reproductive health services.

Of the amount, $67million is development assistance to expand education and basic health services, to provide skill development training and to increase women's opportunities for income generation.
