The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has identified 11 of the 19 people whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition in the recent tragic fire incident at Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka.

These bodies were among at least 71 people killed in the fire incident that left 41 injured as the blaze raged through a chemical warehouse before engulfing several other nearby buildings.

The CID briefed the media on Wednesday at its media centre saying that the 11 identified bodies would be handed over to the victims' families by the concerned authorities at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Besides, the remaining unidentified bodies would require more days to be identified, said Additional DIG of CID Sheikh Md Rezaul Haider.

He expressed his hope that they would be able to hand over the remaining bodies immediately after going through the medical identification process.

He, among others, spoke at the press briefing.

The eight of the bodies identified were set to be handed over to their respective families on Wednesday and the three others would be handed over today (Thursday), DMCH police camp in-charge Bachchu Mia told the FE.

After the fire incident on February 20, nine victims with severe burn injuries were admitted to the DMCH.

A total of four fire victims died at the DMCH burn unit while three others got released after treatment there.

The authorities concerned have so far handed over 51 bodies to their families.

A day after the incident on February 22, the CID started collecting DNA samples from relatives through the DMCH for cross-matching to ascertain identities of the unidentified victims.

As of latest information, at least 48 persons provided DNA samples for the remaining 19 bodies.

A case, however, was filed by the SI of Chawkbazar with the police station a day after the fire.
