Cyclone ‘Phethai’ causes drizzle, halts city life

The capital experienced spells of drizzle on Monday due to the impact of cyclone 'Phethai', which disrupted normal life and halted communication of the city dwellers throughout the day.

The cyclonic storm earlier developed over the Bay of Bengal, and moved onto a north/north-westerly direction towards Andhra Pradesh coast (near Kakinada) of India, according to met office.

Besides, as a consequence of the cyclone 'Phethai' temperature is likely to keep decreasing during days and increasing lightly during nights. Besides, sunlight may not be visible due to the cloudy sky.

Mercury might drop drastically by 3-5 degree Celsius across the country, including Dhaka, once the impact of the cyclone 'Phethai' is over, said Md Abdul Mannan, in-charge of weather forecast of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Furthermore, some parts of the country may start experiencing more temperature fall, he mentioned.

Light rain started in the city along with some other parts of the country since Sunday night, which is likely to continue for a total of 72 hours, added met office.

The office-going people, students, vendors and day-workers faced inconvenience to discharge their daily duties due to the sudden rain.

The disruption accelerated, as parts of many city roads turned into muddy fields due to rainfall amid their ongoing renovation and development works, said commuters.

Jamshed Ali, 37, a private sector service-holder and resident of Mirpur-10 area, told the FE that the unusual rain affected movements of the commuters on the way to their workplaces, as many roads in the city are under renovation.

Roads, with their ongoing development work, turned into muddy-fields due to the rainfall, which intensified the city dwellers' sufferings, he added.

Besides, campaign-related activities for the upcoming general election were also disrupted because of the spells of drizzle in Dhaka and elsewhere across the country.

Meanwhile, maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal number - two amid the severe cyclonic storm 'Phethai'.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been asked to remain close to the coast, and proceed with caution until further notice.

Night temperature may remain nearly unchanged and day temperature may fall by 1-2° Celsius across the country. Rainfall may decrease and night temperature may fall for the next 72 hours.

Maximum temperature was recorded 26.5°C and minimum 19.3°C on Monday.

On Sunday midnight, 'Phethai' centred about 1,385 km southwest of Chattogram Port, 1,345 km southwest of Cox's Bazar Port, 1,235 km southwest of Mongla Port, and 1,250 km southwest of Payra Port, according to Dhaka met office.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 km of the severe cyclone centre was about 89 kph, rising to 117 kph in gusts/squalls.
