Downpour, waterlogging, gridlock cripple city life

FE Report | May 24, 2018 00:00:00

Spells of downpour caused severe water-logging across the capital on Wednesday morning, which brought immense sufferings to the city dwellers.

Many important areas of the capital, including Mirpur, Banani, Farmgate, Dhanmondi-27, Fakirapool and Old Dhaka etc, remained waterlogged for a long on the day after the spells of mid to heavy shower.

The city witnessed 52 millimetres of rainfall from 6.00 am to 12.00 pm on the day, said a met official, Rokeya Ahmed.

Commuters, mostly people bound for respective workplaces as well as school-goers, and traders were put in trouble due to the rainfall.

Many of the commuters had to face traffic congestion in several parts across the city, while many faced unavailability of adequate public transports in some other parts.

Like many other areas in the city, severe gridlock paralysed Farmgate also, where a private official named Shammir Ahmed told the FE that it took nearly two hours for him to reach there from Mirpur-12.

"It was very difficult to board a public bus due to water-logging in Mirpur area," he said.

"The situation worsened in Mirpur than other areas, as the metro-rail construction work is going on there."

The roads have become narrower with potholes here and there, causing troubles in vehicular movements.

He also said he experienced acute tailback at several points, like - Mirpur-10 intersection, Kazipara, Agargaon and Farmgate.

Like him many other commuters were seen suffering due to water-logging.

The rainwater was not completely discharged from several parts of the city, even after hours of rain stoppage.

The area behind Bashundhara City shopping mall was found submerged under knee-deep water at 1.30 pm.

A shopkeeper in the area, Ashraful Islam, said he had to keep his business shut since morning due to the deluge and subsequent water-logging there.

"I have to incur loss often due to water-logging," he noted.

According to the Met Office forecast, the quantity of shower is expected to decrease today (Thursday).
