Expats, foreign nationals to come under census 2021

Reveals Bureau of Statistics at city workshop

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will incorporate the expatriate Bangladeshis and foreign nationals living here for the first time in the upcoming 6th Population and Housing Census 2021.

Other than the indicators directly related to the population and housing census, around 40 per cent of SDG indicators will require population information by sex, age, location, ethnicity, etc to calculate the required indicator.

The BBS authorities claimed that the census 2021 is the milestone for SDG as well as national planning and policymaking without any manipulation or misinformation.

It was informed at a workshop on 'Population and Housing Census 2021: An overview of the Past Questionnaires and Draft Proposal for 2021' at BBS auditorium in the city on Wednesday.

Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) secretary Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty was present as the chief guest.

In a presentation made at the inaugural session of the workshop, Census wing director Zahidul Hoque Sardar said this time the census will be conducted at a time when Bangladesh will be a middle-income country and at the mid-point of SDG.

The census will be conducted in March for seven days in a multimode system preliminary result of which will be published within three months, he added.

He said the long questionnaire will have 90 questions.

As many as 16 SDG indicators related data will be collected through this census while it will work as the denominator for another 70 SDG indicators.

BBS has undertaken a master plan for effectively conducting the 2021 census for the first time.

The main objective of the master plan is to prepare a detailed plan for doing pre-census, during-census and post-census activities in a structured manner with field testing prior to census.

Considering SDG requirement, data on new areas may be added with the 2011 questionnaire while some other questions may be changed.

The new SDG indicator-related data are - number of mobile phone users in the household be sex, whether drinking water source is safely managed, sanitary service is safely managed, hand washing facility with soap and water, treatment of waste water, distance of all season road from HH, slum HH, number of internet users in the HH.

Additional questions are - disability (cross cutting indicator), early childhood education, formal and informal education, ICT skill, informal employment in agriculture sector and access of people with disabilities to public transport.
