Hasina gets Global Women’s Leadership Award

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been selected for the Global Women's Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to advancement of women education and women entrepreneurship in Asia and Asia-Pacific region.

The Global Summit of Women, a US-based non-governmental organisation, will hand over the award to the prime minister at its conference to be held in Sydney from April 26-28.

Hasina will leave the country on Thursday for Australia on a three-day visit at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

She will also hold bilateral talks with her Australian counterpart on April 28 at the Commonwealth House in Sydney. Briefing the newsmen on her visit, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Tuesday said the prime minister has been nominated for this prestigious Global Women's Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to the expansion of women's education and women empowerment in Asia and Asia-Pacific region.

"This year the Global Summit of Women will hold its conference in Sydney and the prime minister will receive the award at the conference. She will also address global women leaders," the foreign minister mentioned.

Previously, eminent global leaders including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, ex-Irish President Mary Robinson and former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet received this award.

Prime Minister Hasina last visited Australia in 2011 to attend the Commonwealth Summit. This time her entourage includes Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Women Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque.
