Japan seeks to mediate on Rohingya issue: FM

FE Report | July 31, 2019 00:00:00

Japan has proposed mediating between Bangladesh and Myanmar over the resolution of Rohingya crisis, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said on Tuesday.

"If both Bangladesh and Myanmar agree, then Japan can hold a dialogue between the two countries in Tokyo," he told newsmen after his meeting with visiting Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono at the state guesthouse Meghna.

He also mentioned that Bangladesh is yet to give its consent to the proposal.

Replying to a question, the minister said Myanmar has responded positively to the Bangladesh's proposal for deploying non-military observers in the Rakhine State to ensure safe return of Rohingya.

"Japan has also appreciated the proposal," he added.

Dr Momen said Japan is eager to resolve the issue as the country has substantial investment in both Bangladesh and Myanmar and it is a friend of both the countries.

Bangladesh has expressed its support to Japan's candidature for permanent membership in the UN Security Council, he added.
