Maersk Line CEO in Ctg on strategic business tour

Søren Skou, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping company, arrived in Chattogram on Wednesday.

This is the first visit of a CEO of the global logistics firm since its business in Bangladesh for more than four decades.

Mr Skou, who flew his personal jet, directly arrived at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram in the evening.

He will visit Ispahani-Summit Alliance depot in Chattogram and a few factories at the Chattogram Export Processing Zone today (Thursday).

This was confirmed by people familiar with the shipping circles in Chattogram and Dhaka.

They told the FE that this visit by the world's largest shipping firm's CEO is most probably due to the recent development in the US-China trade war.

"The global business scenario is changing fast following the US-China trade war. So, this may be a strategic business tour by the top brass of Maersk Line," said a senior shipping person.

He will leave the port city this evening.

Steve Felder, managing director for India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, along with other high officials of the firm will accompany him during the visit.

The Maersk Line has also the largest market share in Bangladesh's external trade.

It operates all over the world and has a fleet of 639 ships which sail every major trade lane globally.

Since 2012, Mr Skou has been the CEO of Maersk Line, encompassing Safmarine, MCC and Seago Line, and has been a member of its executive board since 2007.

The Danish joined Maersk in 1983. Over the next decade and a half, he held various positions in Maersk Line, with roles in Copenhagen, New York and Beijing.

In 1998, he joined Maersk Tankers, where he was CEO from 2001 to 2011.

Mr Skou obtained MBA (honours), IMD, Switzerland.

He did business administration at Copenhagen Business School also obtained Maersk International Shipping Education (M.I.S.E.) degree.
