CHATTOGRAM July 08: Most of the areas of Chattogram, including the low-lying parts of the port city, were inundated on Monday due to heavy rain.

The road communications of Chattogram with Bandarban, Rangamati and Cox's Bazar remained disrupted due to the flood of rainwater.

Sources said sufferings of the people of Chattogram, the second largest city of the country, multiplied due to the waterlogging in the wake of rain.

The normal life in the port city has been remaining disrupted for five consecutive days.

The heavy rain is likely to continue for two or three more days. The local meteorological department advised the authorities to hoist the Signal Number 3 for Chattogram and adjoining areas on the day.

The Bay of Bengal remained rough under the impact of the monsoon rain which started on July 3 last.

The local meteorological department recorded 136.2 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours ending at 12 pm on Monday. The Met office also recorded a total of 285 mm rainfall in the last five days.

The low-lying areas of the port city went under knee-deep water following the torrential rain for several hours. So the inhabitants of low-lying areas remained stranded.

The drains and canals in the city and the rivers in the district like the Dalu, Sangu, Halda and Karnaphuli were full to the brim with rain-fed water causing inundation of low-lying areas.

Loading and unloading of containers and cargoes at the Chattogram port, the prime sea port of the country, were also hampered on the day.

The low-lying areas Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali and Chaktai went under knee-deep water following the torrential rain for several hours.

On the other hand, many areas, particularly low-lying areas of Satkania, were inundated due to the heavy rain. The people at Satkania are living on hillsides running the risk of landslides.
