Nahid questions basis of TIB report on pvt varsities

July 07, 2014 00:00:00

Terming the TIB report on private universities 'immature, incomplete and baseless', Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said Sunday said the government would seek information from the TIB on what basis they prepared the research report, reports UNB.

He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with vice-chancellors and trustee boards of the private universities at his office.

Nahid asked the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) to prove its report to be true or apologise to the nation and withdraw the report.

Admitting that there were some allegations against 15 private universities as brought by the TIB, he said it was not fair to blame all the private universities for that.

Talking about allegations raised against some private universities, the minister said: "We've taken action against some universities but they continue to run their activities after getting court order in their favour. And we can't do anything against the court orders."

According to a study published by the TIB last week, the authorities of private universities have to pay a Tk 10-30 million illegally to certain quarters in the Ministry of Education and the UGC for the approval to set up and operate a university.
