No fuel for vehicles without fitness: HC

89,269 vehicles collect renewed certificates in two months: BRTA

FE REPORT | October 24, 2019 00:00:00

The High Court on Wednesday asked the authorities concerned not to sell fuel oil or gas to vehicles whose fitness certificates have not been renewed.

The High Court bench of Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K M Hafizul Alam passed the order after hearing a writ petition.

The HC bench directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other respondents to take necessary measures so that vehicles without valid fitness certificate are not allowed to buy fuel.

Before the hearing, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) submitted a report to the court in compliance with a previous order of the court.

In its report, the BRTA said only 89,269 vehicles have their fitness certificates renewed in two months -- August and September - across the country following a High Court directive.

And more than 0.39 million vehicles are still running without valid fitness documents, it added.

Meanwhile, another report has been submitted to the High Court on behalf of the police department.

After holding a hearing on the reports, the court passed the order.

Advocate Moin Feroji and Md Rafiul Islam appeared in the court on behalf of BRTA while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik stood for the state.
