One more dies of dengue fever

A 55-year-old man died of dengue fever on Saturday even though the number of people infected with the viral disease has continued to drop, the official data showed.

The victim-identified as Abdul Kalam-hailed from Habiganj district.

Sources said Kalam died in the morning after he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from Habiganj Sadar Hospital.

Although state-owned Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has put the death toll at 47, local media reported that over 100 people died of dengue fever across the country this year.

In the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Saturday, a total of 1,179 people were found dengue positive and hospitalised in various parts of the country.

The statistics on the mosquito-borne disease was provided by the health emergency operation centre and control room under DGHS.

Of the new cases, 607 were reported from outside the capital city while the figure was 570 in Dhaka.

With the latest ones, the overall tally of the dengue-affected people rose to a new high of 62,217 since January, 2019. Of them, 55,968 people returned home after receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, a mobile court jailed an employee of a construction company after Aedes mosquito larvae were found at an under-construction building in the city's Dhanmondi area.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) conducted a mobile court led by its executive magistrate Mizanur Rahman on a construction site of Nagar Homes Limited located in Dhanmondi-12, according to a press release.

As the court found Aedes larvae on the site, it slapped a fine of Tk 50,000, it said.

On failure to pay financial penalty, the mobile court magistrate sentenced Palash, supervisor of the real estate company, to three days in prison, the release added.

The mobile courts on the day inspected a total of 141 buildings in different areas including Jatrabari, Sadarghat and Dhanmondi to destroy Aedes mosquito larvae and its breeding grounds.

During the drives, the courts also fined the owners of five buildings Tk 17,000 after it found Aedes mosquito larvae, dirty and unhygienic environment on the buildings' premises, it said.

The mosquito-borne viral disease started spreading fast since the second half of July last, breaking all the previous dengue-related record of the country.
