Suicide incidents a national problem

Suicide needs to be declared a national problem as it is increasing alarmingly in Bangladesh, especially among the adolescents, speakers said at a counselling workshop Sunday.

They stressed the need for creating a healthy society by overcoming the crisis of life.

They were exchanging views at the workshop arranged by Brighter Tomorrow Foundation (BTF) at City Centre in the capital.

Professor Dr. A A M S Arefin Siddique, former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University inaugurated the daylong workshop as the chief guest. Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Associate Professor of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), presented a technical paper at the workshop.

Dr. Helal in his presentation stressed the need for changing attitude, thinking and behaviour to adapt to the changing situations.

Dr. Farzana Rahman, Assistant Professor of NIMH, and Dr. Chironjib Biswas , Assistant Professor of Uttara Women Medical College, also presented papers at the programme.

Joyosree Zaman, Founder President of BTF, and Dr. Farshid Bhuiyan, General Secretary of BTF, gave presentations on the activities and the future plans of the organisation.

Ms Zaman said September 10, the world suicide prevention day, should be observed across the country at the national level.

Around 40 participants including doctors, teachers, businessmen and students participated in the workshop.

Brighter Tomorrow Foundation is working for people especially for the adolescents for their well being.
