Three killed in ‘gunfights’ in city, two dists

Two suspected drug dealers and a rape accused were killed in reported gunfights in the capital, Munshiganj and Rangpur on Tuesday, report agencies.

The incident in Dhaka took place in the Dumoni area of the 300 Feet Road in Khilkhet around 1.00am on Tuesday.

RAB-1 Squad Commander Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamruzzaman said a team conducted a raid in the Dumoni area on information of drug trade taking place there.

"Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug dealers opened fire on them. RAB retaliated which led the assailants to flee the scene. At one point, a man was found lying on the spot with bullet wounds."

He was rushed to the Kurmitola Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the RAB official said.

In Munshiganj, a man accused in 11 drugs cases was killed in a reported gunfight in the Ramsingh area in sadar upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Sujon Miah, 36, son of Md Mosharraf Hossain of Gobindanagar.

RAB-11 police super Enayet Mannan said they raided the area acting on a tip- off. Sujon and his cohorts fired on RAB, triggering a gunfight. Later, RAB took bullet-hit Sujon to Munshiganj General Hospital where the doctor pronounced him dead. In Rangpur, a man accused in a number of cases including rape, murder and abduction, was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Purba Echli village in Gangachhora upazila around 1:30am.

The man was identified as Shahidul Islam Sumon, 35, son of Maheswar Ali, a resident of Ranodeshwar village in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.
