Zia's 37th death anniv today

BNP will observe the 37th death anniversary of its founder and former President Ziaur Rahman across the country today (Wednesday) with due respect, reports UNB.

BNP and different socio-political organisations have taken up elaborate programmes.

The programmes include discussion meetings, milad mahfil, photo exhibition and free medical camps to mark the day.

The party men will wear black badges on the day.

On the occasion, the party will publish posters and supplements in newspapers and distribute food and clothes among the destitute.

On May 30, 1981, Zia was assassinated by a cabal of army officers at Chattogram Circuit House. He founded BNP in 1978.

Born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari in Bogura, Zia was a sector commander during the Liberation War and awarded Bir Uttam, the highest gallantry award for a living officer for his wartime services.

BNP and its associate organisations have chalked out a 10-day programme to observe the day. The observance of the death anniversary began on May 25 and will end on June 05.

As a part of the programmes, BNP arranged a discussion on Thursday at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

The party flag will be hoisted at half-mast, while black flags to be hoisted at the party's Nayapaltan central office and all other party offices across the country at 6am on Wednesday.

Leaders and activists of the party, led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will place wreaths at Zia's grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning.

Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal will hold a milad and doa mahfil on the premises of Zia's grave.
