ACC raids nursing institute in city over graft charge

FE Report | February 04, 2019 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) raided on Sunday a nursing institute under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) over allegation of taking extra fees from admission seekers.

During the drive at National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER), the commission revealed that the institute has collected Tk 2.3 million illegally from its students.

Earlier, ACC in its hotline-106, received complaints that NIANER has been charging on an average Tk 29,000 as extra fees the students for their admission in Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programme.

An ACC team comprising assistant director Sharika Islam and deputy assistant director Afnan Jannat Keya, scrutinising payment slips and bank account of the institute, found evidence of taking extra money from the students.

However, the director of the nursing institute also confirmed the incident and pledged to return the money to respective students within one month by forming an inquiry committee.

Speaking about the drive, ACC director general (admin) Muhammad Munir Chowdhury said collecting extra fees from the students beyond rules is a type of corruption.

The commission will send a recommendation to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to take appropriate actions against the people responsible for such irregularity, he added.
