A team of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday conducted a drive in Keshabpur upazila of Jashore based on an allegation of creating a fish enclosure on a grabbed piece of khas land.
During the drive, the ACC team found that a member of the local Union Parishad had taken possession of total 335 square feet of a village road on khas land illegally aiming to establish a fish enclosure.
The road that was 55 feet in width all along shrunk to three feet at the grabbed portion, to the inconvenience of its users.
ACC Jashore office deputy director Md Nazmussadat led the drive in assistance with local assistant commissioner (AC land) and surveyor.
The AC land assured the Commission that the land for the village road will be demarcated soon to reclaim it from illegal occupation.
During the drive, locals informed the ACC team that a large amount of khas land in the neighbourhood has been grabbed by influential people.
In another drive in Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna, the ACC stopped illegal sand extraction from the bank of the Padma River.
An ACC team also went to the Laxmipur regional passport office after receiving a complaint through its hotline-106 about active presence of brokers and harassment of the service recipients.
The Commission found evidence of irregularities in the passport office and instructed the authorities concerned to improve service quality there.
In the meantime, the Commission grilled six officials of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) over allegation of procuring furniture at abnormal price for the Cox's Bazar Medical College Hospital.
The individuals facing interrogation are -- DGHS director general Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad, DGHS director Dr Abdur Rashid, deputy directors Dr Md Yunus and Dr Kamrul Kibria, head assistant (medical education) Abdul Malek, and upper division clerk Khairul Alam.
The anti-graft watchdog, after initial investigation, stopped payment of the fake bill amounting Tk 208 million of the purchase of the furniture for the state-run medical college and hospital.
