Bank official dies in road accident

Cargo vessel fire kills crew

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 17: A bank manager was killed and two others injured in a road accident in the port city on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Azim, assistant vice president (AVP) and manager of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd's Khatungonj branch.

Others injured in the accident were Shahidul Islam, also a senior officer of the branch, and auto-rickshaw driver Jahir Uddin.

Sub-inspector of Double Mooring police station Md Sharif Uddin said bankers Nurul Azim and Shahidul Islam were going to their workplace at Khatungonj by a CNG auto-rickshaw from their Rampura residence in the city.

As the auto- rickshaw was crossing the Dewanhat overpass, a bus hit it from behind at around 10.00 am. It turned upside down injuring the passengers. They were taken to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared Azim dead.

UNB adds: a crew member of a cargo vessel was burnt to death while two others sustained injuries as a fire broke out at the anchored vessel at Bijoynagar Ghat in Karnaphuli river in the port city on Tuesday night.
