The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished on Monday 56 illegally built structures on the banks of the River Turag in Palpara, Kawindia and Jahurabad areas under Mirpur police station in the city.

It also reclaimed one acre of land.

The structures that were pulled down included one four-storey building, four three-storey buildings, seven two-storey buildings, thirteen one storey buildings, eight semi-pucca and 23 tin-shed houses built on the banks of the Turag river.

The drive will be conducted again on Wednesday and Thursday.

The BIWTA had recently carried out drives against structures illegally built on the bank of the River Buriganga in the capital.

It has been carrying out drives to reclaim the river's land now under illegal occupation of the grabbers.

It will go for afforestation on the recovered land of the river and install strong pillars to identify the boundaries of the river.

The BIWTA has also taken a Tk 8.48-billion project to build 19 jetties in areas covering Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Kanchpur, Tanbazar, Machuwabazar and Khanpur.

It will construct a 50-kilometre walkway, plant saplings along the path and set up three eco-parks at Shinnirtek, Tongi and Ashulia under the project.

It will dredge 10,000 kilometres of waterways in the rivers as per its Delta Plan.
