The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Wednesday razed to the ground a total of 29 illegally-built structures during its ongoing eviction drive on the banks of the River Turag.

The BIWTA also reclaimed a canal and one acre of land from illegal occupation of encroachers during the operation at Kawindia Mouza in Savar upazila of Dhaka.

The structures that were dismantled included one three-storey building, four two-storey buildings, 12- one-storey buildings, seven semi-pacca buildings and five tin-shed buildings.

The authorities will conduct an operation today (Thursday) at Shinnirtek on Mirpur Beribandh (Embankment) in the capital, according to sources at the BIWTA.

Earlier, the BIWTA during an operation on Monday demolished some three-storey buildings, seven two-storey buildings, thirteen one-storey buildings, eight semi-pacca buildings and 23 tin-shed houses on the banks of the Turag. It also reclaimed one acre of land from the possession of encroachers.

The BIWTA recently launched a crackdown on the illegally-built structures on the banks of the River Buriganga in the capital.

It has been carrying out drives to reclaim the river's land from under illegal occupation of the grabbers.

The core aim of the eviction drive is to reclaim grabbed river land and ensure navigability of the waterways. The BIWTA will also go for afforestation on the recovered land and erect pillars to demarcate the boundaries of the river, said sources at the government agency.

The BIWTA will build 19 jetties in areas covering Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Kanchpur, Tanbazar, Machuwabazar and Khanpur under a project involving Tk8.48-billion.

Besides, it will build a 50-kilometre walkway, plant saplings along the path and set up three eco-parks at Shinnirtek, Tongi and Ashulia under the project.
