BJKS for exemplary punishment of responsible persons

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) demanded on Monday an exemplary punishment for those responsible for Upaban Express train accident.

A written statement signed by its secretary general Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said that corruption, irregularities and negligence of duties by a sectionBangladesh Railway (BR) personnel are rampant.

He demanded of the government to inquire into the causes of the accident and ensure punishment for those who are responsible for the accident.

The Dhaka- bound intercity Upaban Express from Sylhet met the accident when the train was crossing a bridge at Baramchal in Kulaura upazila around 11:50pm on Sunday. The mishap left six passengers dead and over five hundred injured.

Mr Chowdhury said that the honest officials of BR are being cornered while the dishonest ones are getting reward.

He said the quality of BR's passenger services is declining and speed of trains coming down day by day.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government has allocated huge funds for over 50 projects to infuse dynamism in the railway services and improvement of passenger services.

He called upon the government to ensure transparency and accountability of the projects by taking zero tolerance policy against corruption.
