City still in a holiday mood

FE Report | January 01, 2019 00:00:00

Dhaka is still in a holiday mood as most of city dwellers are yet to return from their village home after casting their votes in the 11th parliamentary election held on Sunday.

A large number of city dwellers went to their village home to cast their votes as they had a holiday for three days including Friday and Saturday (weekend) and Sunday (polling day).

Many shopping malls in the city still remain closed, but shops in different areas were opened.

During visit to railway stations, bus and launch terminals, the FE correspondent found no crowd of passengers there.

An official at Kamalapur Railway Station said they shut some ticket counters due to a smaller number of passengers.

He, however, expressed the hope that people will start returning to the city from today (Tuesday).

A few vehicles were seen plying the roads. Many city dwellers have heaved a sigh of relief as they face no traffic jam in the city now.

Even many teenagers were seen playing cricket on lanes and streets in different areas.

However, prices of green vegetables and fishes increased a little bit at most of the kitchen markets in the city due to short supply caused by restrictions imposed on movement of vehicles including truck ahead of the general election.

During visit to Fakirapool, Shantinagar and AGB Colony kitchen markets, the FE correspondent found that there were few numbers of fish traders compared to that of other days.

The traders attributed the hike in prices to lower supply of essential commodities.

Carrot was sold between Tk 40 and Tk 50 per kilogram while potato (newly harvested) Tk 35 and Tk 40, tomato Tk 40 and Tk 50 and green chilli between Tk 120 and Tk 150 per kg.

A kg of ruhit fish was sold between Tk 300 and Tk 500.

Beef and mutton were sold between Tk 480 and Tk 500 and Tk 700 and Tk 750 per kg respectively.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed restrictions on access to Gulshan and Dhaka University areas on the eve of 31st night, forcing many city dwellers to stay at their home.

The police have taken security measures to avert any post-polls violence and untoward incidents.
