CHITTAGONG, Dec 25: The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) have today admitted that the police of Karnaphuli thana wanted to divert a rape case into a simple robbery case and tried to save the criminals involved in the rape of four housewives during robbery in a house.

Facing multiple questions on the role of the police regarding the rape incident deputy commissioner (port) of the CMP Harunor Rashid said the police failed to nab the criminals and perform their duties responsibly despite protests from the villagers.

He said that he was not authorised to take action against the officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli police station. It is only the Police Commissioner who will take departmental action against officer- in- charge Syedul Mostafa and other police personnel, he said this at a press conference called at the Karnaphuli police station under the CMP this afternoon to brief the media on the sensational four women rape case that occurred on December 12.

Additional deputy commissioner (port) Arefin Jewel, Karnaphuli OC Syedul Mostafa and other senior officials of the CMP were present at the press conference.

A group of miscreants raped four women of a family in

Baro Uthan village under Karnaphuli thana at night and looted cash and household goods. Three of the housewives of the same family used to live in the house with their only mother-in-law and children while their husbands are now living in Middle East countries. Another housewife was one of their relatives who came to visit them.

The Karnaphuli police including the officer-in-charge Syedul Mostafa were reluctant to conduct any raid and did not even register a rape case in seven days of the rape incident, the victim women said.

They said that the police filed a rape case only when local MP and State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Zaved instructed them to register the case and arrest the culprits at the earliest.

The police recently arrested three suspects but the main culprits are still at large, said the victims' family. Those arrested are Md Sujan alias Abu, Ahmed Faruqui and Bappi.
