Crop protection embankments’ work in haor areas nearing end

Manju urges people to remain alert against sabotage

SYLHET, Apr 4: Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju said the government has given the highest- ever allocation for the construction and reconstruction of the crop protection embankments in the haor areas with a view to saving the vast crops land from the early flood and excessive rains.

Besides, the government has taken various humanitarian steps for helping the poor farmers of the region after they had lost the standing crops last year.

The minister came up with the remarks while addressing a view- exchange meeting as the chief guest at Sunamganj Circuit House after visiting some embankment works in different upazilas of the district on Wednesday.

The event was organised to discuss the latest situation of the embankment works and issues relating to protecting the crops till harvest.

Deputy Commissioner Md. Sabirul Islam chaired the meet while State Minister for Water Resources Nazrul Islam, Shamsunnahar Begum, MP, Additional Secretary Yousuf Hossain, WDB's Director General Mahfuzur Rahman addressed the meeting, among others.

The minister was apprised that about 94 per cent works of the crop protection embankments have been completed.

The minister said it has been possible due to timely decision of the government.

He said since the harvest is yet to start in full swing, all should remain alert so that none can cause damage to the embankments.

He also urged the farmers in the haor region to raise the cultivation of early variety of Boro (BRRI-28) that can be harvested much ahead of the rains and possible floods every year.

As the locals raised demand for dredging the rivers and canals, the minister said the government has already started dredging some rivers at different points.
