Customs arrest Indian nat’l with foreign currencies at HSIA

Members of the country's customs intelligence on Monday arrested an Indian national along with huge foreign currencies from Hazral Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), Dhaka.

The arrestee was identified as Saleqin Sheikh, hailing from Hugli of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Customs intelligence recovered undeclared foreign currencies worth Tk 22.8 million while searching his body, an official said.

On secret information, a team of customs intelligence challenged Mr Saleqin, bearing passport no- Z4304454, when he came from India and was trying to fly on BG 0088 flight (Dhaka-Bangkok route).

After searching his body, the officials recovered currencies including euro, franc, US dollar, Thai baht, Japanese yen, Indian rupee and BDT worth Tk 22806027.

Mr Saleqin was arrested under the Foreign Currency Control Act and Customs Act.

Case has also been filed against him for money laundering.
