Disaster Reduction Day observed

The International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed across the country on Saturday, stressing the need for creating awareness and ensuring active participation of the people of all strata alongside the government and non-government organisations in all programmes to reduce disaster risks, reports BSS.

The theme of this year's International Day for Disaster Reduction was "Reducing Economics Losses".

Marking the day, a discussion was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Secretary of the ministry Md Shah Kamal in the chair.

Maya said the government gave importance to 'Disaster Risk Reduce' (DRR) instead of distributing relief in the last 10 years.

Bangladesh is now a role model in combating natural disasters, he added.
